Artist's Statement.
My computer and I were attempting to impose some level of order or symmetry upon an unruly tiger lily photographed in an urban alley when the spotted bloom metamorphosed into a complex and compelling creature with brilliant orange wings, long dainty feet and glittering black eyes. I guess you could say that’s the day on which I became a “double visionary.”
This odd coupling of nature and technology soon spawned a sea creature whose mother was a sunflower, a monkey whose father was an anemone, a steer who is descended from a line of aristocratic hyacinths, a pair of amorous fish hatched not from eggs but from a bulb, and a pair of lovebirds who found true romance in Hawaii.
Subtle floral imagery reminiscent of the water colorist's art next took root in the hothouse I call my studio, along with dizzying kaleidoscopic pinwheels and strange sets of twins. Framed limited edition fine art prints have since flourished in galleries and juried shows in North Carolina and Virginia.
The Artist.
Rita Mattia lives in a southern state, much to the continuing dismay of family and friends in her native northeastern U.S. In addition to her photographic imagery, she is an avid and inventive knitter, a scribbler of stories and plays, and one who has toiled with some success in advertising in New York, Baltimore, Washington and Richmond, Virginia. This latter explains the persistent presence of food on the table, and funds for the archival inks and papers used in printing these occasionally alarming but invariably engaging images.
In keeping with that final reference, the artist has asked the web designer to include these words: A gift of one or more of Rita Mattia's fine art prints is sure to delight the lucky recipient, and will enhance any room or décor in your own home or workspace, blah blah blah, oh, please let me get back to making art.
